Meet my new girl – Sakura Matou.

It was a very long wait but a few days ago she finally showed up and now Sakura is home:

Just as I have heard many people say over and over, I can’t believe how big she is.  haha   It’s one thing to measure out what something 2 feet tall is and it’s another to see her in person.   I got a little nervous by the damage on the box from USP:

It’s funny how both ends of the box, right where the big orange FRAGILE stickers were, were damaged.  Attention UPS, FRAGILE is not a city in Italy.  Thankfully Sakura wasn’t damaged at all though the Dollfie Dream box she came in was:

This would have been a problem if I was planning on selling her – a damaged box would make it harder to get as good a price for her.  Thankfully, I have no intention of selling her at all, even if she’s currently listing on Ebay for about twice what I paid for her.

I’ve been posting a bunch of pictures of her on my Flickr page if you want to see more.  I have plans on doing a whole bunch of updates so there will be plenty to see soon.

I ordered a scale replica of a Gibson Les Paul guitar that is about the right size for her and also a 1/3 scale (her size) Glock G17 handgun.  I’m also looking at getting a 1/3 scale couch for her to sit in but since it’s a little pricey, about $100, I may wait a little bit.

I’ve noticed now that I’m even more tempted to get a 2nd Dollfie Dream so she will have a sister.  I’d love to get the DD Yoko but she’s going for about $1,000 now on auctions so I’m not sure if I’d do that.  I’d also really like to get DD Mio and Yui (from the anime K-On!) but they are about $800+ each so that’s not much better.  Another alternative is to make my own DD girl which would run me about $450 if I do my own face-up.

I guess it’s best to wait for now and get back to concentrating on getting my store online.

I have a dream…

Posted on August 17th, 2010 in Otaku Depot | Comments Off

I just noticed it’s been about 3 months since I’ve last updated the blog.  One major reason I don’t update as often is that I’ve stopped playing World of Warcraft a while ago so I didn’t have as many things I felt like posting about.  The other reason is that I’ve been busy on something else in my life.  It’s called: Otaku Depot.

Otaku Depot is the start of something I’ve dreamed about for many years now:  “Owning my own business.”  This dream started years ago with the simple idea of how great it would be to not have to commute to work every day and to be able to get up in the morning, get a cup of coffee (most likely still in my underwear – haha), and sit down at the computer to start my work day.  Sure, a dream mostly based on being lazy but a dream none the less.

After 9/11 and the downturn in the economy I had lost my job and had very hard time finding something that would even come close to paying what I once was making.   I eventually got to the point of selling  useless stuff from my closets on Ebay to pay my bills and I found out something strange.  I was working 12 – 14 hour days at home and I was loving it.  I was working harder doing this than I had at my last job making over 50K a year and I loved being my own boss.  I found I really enjoyed many aspects of the business life when I was in charge.

Eventually I started running out of stuff from my closets and found a job at a web hosting company and went back to the regular job life.  I learned a great deal and eventually got a job with my current company where I continued to learn more but it wasn’t as satisfying as working for myself.  From time to time I would look into the idea of starting my own business but I would get turned away from it by the idea of how hard it would be to get setup, do taxes, get permits, wholesalers, credit card processors….  Plus everybody who would say: “If it was that easy, everybody would do it.”

Well, a few months ago I noticed that I was starting to get a nice little savings together and had enough to get started if I wanted to give it a try.  I was 40 years old and at some point said to myself, ‘how long do you want to wish you had your own business without actually doing something about it?’   I don’t want to find myself at 50 or 60 and going to a job I don’t love and wishing I would have done something earlier.   I’m not 41 and wish I had started this 10 or 15 years ago.

So, I bought a domain name, registered by DBA (Doing Business As) with the state, and though a long confusing process eventually got my county and city permit to sell items and collect taxes.  The hardest part of it all was trying to find the information and then dealing with governmental paperwork.  I have the tech part down fine but the legal issues are where I’m usually lost.

This past week I’ve put in my first order for products to be shipped to the warehouse space I’m using to supply products for my store.  Customer’s place orders on my website, the orders go to the credit card company (or PayPal) to get charged, and then to the warehouse where they pack and ship out the products and keep the customer updated on the shipping/tracking numbers.

I can’t say my dream is to become incredibly wealthy though I wouldn’t mind that.  My real dream is achievable I believe.  I want to be able to support myself completely from running my business so I can do it full time, still have enough money to save for retirement and still “have fun”.  I mostly want to have Otaku Depot become one of the first places Americans think of to get a figure because of the stores selection, quality, price, and most of all – because of the trust that they have in me and the store.

One of the best customer experiences I’ve had, and continue to have frequently, is with New Egg.  Their selection, quality, and customer service is excellent.  Their prices are very good as well but because of the other features I don’t bother shopping around any more if I need something for my computer.  I go to New Egg and buy it there.  I would like to have customers of Otaku Depot do the same when it comes to anime figures.

I don’t plan on turning this blog into an avenue to promote my store, it’s not like I really get readers here anyway, but since this blog is really an online meandering of my thoughts and life I figured I should update it with this info.

In other news……   It looks like I should be getting Dollfie Dream Sakura on Friday if UPS lives up to their delivery date!!!!!!

I can’t wait till she comes in.  I’ve already got about 5 different outfits for her as well as a really nice stand from DollfieWorld for her as well.  Oh yea, she’s going to be a bit spoiled.  haha   I also get the feeling she’s going to be getting a sister in the near future.

Dollfie Sakura Get!!!

Posted on May 29th, 2010 in Anime, Dollfie | Comments Off

Success!!!  I got the official word today that I am getting Dollfie Dream Sakura Matou

I got a cell phone message while at work from a very nice girl from Volks USA.  They had emailed me and never heard back from me and then I had sent them another email this morning and since I was asking for info again they new I had never received their other messages.  It seems my web hosting company and their spam filtering are causing some issues and I never got the confirmation email.  She did confirm for me that I had won, which of course was the reason they took the money from my account.

The email problem also explains why I never got the payment email for an order I placed about two weeks ago with AmiAmi.  I also had sent them emails asking for payment information and when I got home tonight I had an email from them, they sent it from another email address which I finally got.  Woot!  More Otaku goodness coming my way.

I placed an order for an original Danny Choo – Mirai-chan Dakimakura.  It’s basically a pillow case for a hugging pillow, you get the idea from the picture:

The front side has a much more “acceptable” picture of Cute Mirai Suenaga:

What I’m actually planning on doing is using the pillow in a similar way that Danny Choo does in his office, as a window covering as seen here:

I love his Dollfie Saber in her baggy socks sitting on the side of his desk!!!

Now that I’ve confirmed I’m getting Dollfie Sakura the only negative I have to cope with is that it’s not going to show up till the end of August.  I’m really getting tempted to make my own custom Dollfie Dream.  It would be a bit cheaper than one of theirs and it would be unique but even if I can put one together for about $450 that’s still a bit of money.  I have to keep in mind that I have a few pre-ordered figures out there that will be due in the next few months.  In July I should get my Moe Moe Kyun Mio-chan from K-On!

Oh, I can’t wait – though I do need to figure out where they will all go.

Still too early to tell…..

I’m not very good when it comes to waiting…  I haven’t heard back from Volks USA yet about the status of me getting (or not getting) Sakura but another good sign did happen.  The money in my account went from being on hold to shows as paid to Volks.

I’m very confident that I’m going to be getting her but I’d really like to see the email that is confirming that.  I’m guessing they are rather busy since it’s so soon after Dolls Party.

Even if I find out I win, they aren’t delivering the Dollfies till late August.  Ugh!!!

Perhaps I’ve spoken too soon.

Just over a day after I decide to finally get around to posting that I didn’t get Sakura I get some information that may indicate she will be mine.  I can’t say for sure yet.

Last night I was spending time trying to decide if I should just go crazy and bid on a Ebay auction for a Dollfie Dream Yoko, the version I want the most, but was having trouble to commit to the $1,000 price.  That’s not a typo, a thousand dollars.  it also wasn’t the buy it now price, that was just the opening bid along with the $70 cost to ship from Japan.

I decided to check my bank account once again just to be sure I could afford this and still have enough money to live off of for the next 8 or 9 days when I saw that my balance was much lower than I thought it should be.  At first I panicked but soon noticed I had a hold on almost $570 from Volks on my account.  I hadn’t placed any other orders from them and so can only assume this may be related to the Dolls Party 23 lottery entry that I thought I had lost.

I’m still not sure what happened, why I had the original hold on my money released for a week or so and now it’s added back on.  I’m hoping what this is indicating is for some reason someone who had won couldn’t be contacted or for some reason couldn’t pay and I was selected.   Dare I hope?     I still didn’t receive any emails from them saying that I won so I sent them an email last night asking why a hold was put back on my money if I hadn’t won.    Considering the lottery entry ended May 7th and the winners were to be contacted May 14th and losing lottery winners were supposed to have had their orders canceled I better have won or I’ll be pissed off that they are putting holds on my money, preventing me from accessing it, when they have no right to it.

Finding out I actually won Sakura would help ease my anger a great deal.  :P
